NORDIC CENTRE DAY LODGE
The Day Lodge is 10,566 sq. ft., expandable in future to 14,000 sq. ft. and is intended to welcome summer and winter visitors to the Callaghan Valley. It offers a 200 seat restaurant and lounge, equipment rentals (cross-country skiing and mountain biking), washrooms, retail, management and sports offices, and emergency facilities. Wood was critical to establishing a rugged and warm ambience for the Lodge welcoming all visitors to the Callaghan Valley. In combination with the stone fireplaces and large expanses of glass oriented toward dramatic glaciers, the wood conveys comfort and beauty. Both the beams and roof soffits are expressed in Fir to anchor the building in the Westcoast landscape and building tradition, stretching back to the First Nations. The entire building geometry is generated off the First Nations Welcoming Figure post. ![]() ![]() MERRICK PROJECT PRESENTATIONEvery Friday, Merrick staff gather at the end of the day for an informal project presentation. The project Principal and team members update the group on challenges and successes. Very often the presentation is augmented by a site tour, and always a post-presentation social. |
