This 1915 Class “A” heritage building required a complex heritage renovation and seismic upgrade to convert a historic Bank of Montreal building into a state-of-the-art downtown campus facility for Simon Fraser University. A recipient of multiple awards, the new facility was re–purposed to successfully accommodate multiple functions for a Graduate School of Business, which specializes in research for emerging areas such as biotechnology management, technological entrepreneurship, international financial markets, organizational change and managing for sustainability. The school also partners with businesses to create responsive and relevant executive education and graduate management programs tailored to meet today’s industry needs. The design process was driven by strict adherence to existing conditions, budget constraints and space programming requirements within existing and confined building parameters. Completed in late 2005, it integrates contemporary learning technologies with a variety of program-specific spaces supporting international conferencing and remote education capabilities, while celebrating and complimenting the architectural fabric of the original building.
